March 8th, 2011: Breakfast Television

The Manitoba Consumer Monitor Food Panel was featured on Breakfast Television. One of the questions found on the first survey asked Manitobans how often they included products containing hemp into their diet. As a tribute to Nutrition month, we made a delicious hemp smoothie recipe:

- 1/2 cup of reduced sugar orange juice, not from concentrate

- 3/4 cup of reduced sugar, low calorie vanilla yogurt

- 1 cup of frozen berries, equal to 2 fruit servings

- 1 tsp of honey

- 1 tsp of lemon juice

- 4 tbsp of hemp protein

Blend until smooth. This recipe makes 2 servings and includes 125 calories, 21 mg sodium, 63 mg potassium, 9 g sugar, 2.5 g fibre, 9 g protein. Over half of the calorie content comes from the hemp protein powder. The sugar content in this recipe includes naturally produced sugars, but if you need to reduce the sugar content - omit the honey and replace the orange juice with unsweetened hemp beverage. This will bring down the sugar content to 4 g of sugar. You may prefer to use hemp seed instead of the hemp protein. This will reduce the calorie content, but does not contain as much fibre or protein.
